OTTAWA HILLS -- An Ohio appeals court has overturned the conviction of a former Ottawa Hills police officer who was found guilty of shooting and paralyzing an unarmed motorcyclist.

The court ruled that Thomas White should get a new trial because the jury was not given proper instructions when they convicted him in 2010.

The jury found White guilty of felonious assault with a gun specification for the May 2009 shooting of Mike McCloskey who was paralyzed from the waist down as a result.

White was then sentenced to 10 years in prison. He has been free on bond during the appeals process. 

There is no word on when a new trial may begin.
