SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident that took the life of an elderly Toledo man on New Year's Eve.

Officials say the driver of the other vehicle involved, 27-year-old Garret Dennis of Toledo, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.

The crash happened along U.S. 20 (Central Avenue) at McCord Road around 6:30 P.M.

Following the crash 86-year-old Clement Schneider, Jr. was taken to Flower Hospital with serious injuries but later died.

Authorities say Schneider was not wearing a seatbelt when he failed to yield to Dennis at a red turn signal and his vehicle was hit on the right side.

Dennis was wearing his seatbelt and suffered only minor injuries.

Charges are now pending in the case as the investigation continues.
